Scores
of frustrated customers were left stranded on platforms at every
station for more than an hour after services were cancelled in both
directions between Chatswood and Tallawong about 9am.By about 10.15am,
Sydney Metro announced services were running again at a "reduced
frequency", but advised commuters to expect delays.
"Please allow
extra time, listen to announcements and check information displays,"
Sydney Metro announced via Twitter.Promising train services every four
minutes, commuters were quick to take to Twitter to express their anger
when services came to a complete standstill during peak hour on Monday.
Sydney
Metro has apologised for the inconvenience and it has since been
revealed the disruption was triggered when a worker set off a fire alarm
in the control centre.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance says the alarm was set off as a result of "human error".
"What
we saw, unfortunately, was a technician in a control room break a fire
suppressant system and, in breaking the glass, gas was released through
the control centre, which led to an evacuation," Constance told
reporters.
"Because of the very nature of the gas release, it meant there was no oxygen to ensure people were safe inside the centre."
