As early as the 12th century, windmills were already being used for various industries-most notably, farming. Aside from milling grains, windmills were also used to supply water for households, which would have been otherwise difficult to come by in vast and arid areas. However, during the Industrial Revolution, businesses embraced industrialization and the innovations in various equipment the Revolution presented. When one is asked to conjure images of a windmill, people most often attribute it to the countryside, rural areas and provinces. The windmill, in the age of machines and nonrenewable energy sources, had no place in the city.
